Our Story

East Downtown Houston has evolved from Houston’s original Chinatown to an industrial hub, and now into one of the city’s most dynamic mixed-use neighborhoods. The district’s transformation reflects Houston’s growth while honoring its diverse cultural heritage.

1930s

Cantonese immigrants established Houston’s original Chinatown in what is now East Downtown, creating a vibrant community of businesses, restaurants, and cultural celebrations.

Mid-20th Century

The neighborhood transitioned into an industrial hub with warehouses and manufacturing facilities, serving as a key economic engine for the growing city.

1999

East Downtown Management District and TIRZ 15 (Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone No. 15) were established to guide strategic development and infrastructure improvements.

2008

The district was officially rebranded as “EaDo” (East Downtown), marking a new era of mixed-use development and urban revitalization.

2010s

Shell Energy Stadium (Houston Dynamo and Dash) opened, catalyzing development. Artists, galleries, and creative spaces transformed the neighborhood’s industrial character.

2020s-Present
